After the Government’s imposition of a four-week long national lockdown at the beginning of November, which included a ban on international leisure travel, MAG saw passenger levels drop 91.3% compared to 2019. These were among the lowest levels recorded since the start of the pandemic.
As the aviation sector continues to be one of the hardest hit, November’s national lockdown suppressed consumer demand to travel. Demand is expected to increase again following the end of the lockdown and with the imminent implementation of the Government’s ‘test and release’ scheme, which will reduce quarantine from 14 days to potentially as little as five for passengers arriving in the UK.
As throughout the pandemic, East Midlands Airport continues to be strong in its cargo performance, with tonnage up 26.4% on November 2019, as the airports operation reaches its busiest time of the year in the run up to the festive season.
