As England entered its third national lockdown and the Government introduced mandatory pre-departure testing for all international arrivals, MAG served 93.9% fewer passengers in January 2021 compared to the same month in 2020 – serving 236,917 across the month. This figure is comparable to those seen during both previous national lockdowns. It is lower compared to December 2020, owing to a ban on international leisure travel, with greater powers given to the police and border force staff to ensure all travel through UK airports is essential. MAG’s rolling 12-month total was also down 80.9% on January 2020.

Traffic is expected to stay low into February, owing to a further government announcement in late January which will require all arrivals from 33 ‘red list countries’ to isolate for 10 days in hotel accommodation from Monday 15th February.

East Midlands and London Stansted’s cargo operations both performed well throughout January, with loads up 9.2% and 48.4% respectively compared to the same month last year.
