As England’s tier system of Coronavirus restrictions was reintroduced, MAG served 88.9% fewer passengers in December 2020 compared to the same month in 2019. This figure was an improvement in comparison to November 2020, owing to the end of national restrictions which banned international leisure travel, alongside MAG’s own announcement that it had opened Coronavirus testing centres at all of its airports. The Government also introduced the ‘Test to Release’ scheme on 15th December, which allows passengers to reduce their quarantine period. MAG’s 12 month rolling total was also down 75.1% compared to 2019.
East Midlands and London Stansted’s cargo operations both performed well in December, with loads up 43.5% and 18.8% on 2019 respectively, as both airports met consumers’ increased demand for online purchases in the final run-up to Christmas.
