As Covid-19 travel restrictions continue to provide uncertainty for passengers, MAG airports continue to serve significantly fewer passengers than in previous years, with numbers across MAG’s three airports down 74.9% compared with August 2019. However, passenger numbers were 93.9% higher at MAG airports in August than in July, demonstrating the strength of demand for safe air travel.
Overall, MAG’s rolling 12-month passenger figures are down 48.8% on 2019.
MAG’s cargo aircraft operations at London Stansted and East Midlands continue to see strong growth, with a year-on-year increase of 24.3% and 18.5% respectively in August. These operations are feeding the increased demand of online shopping from consumers, with volumes eclipsing what would normally be expected during the weeks leading up to Christmas. The significant scale back of long-haul passenger flights – which normally carry significant volumes of cargo in their holds - has, for example, driven a 120% increase in the volume of goods travelling between East Midlands Airport and JFK airport in New York on cargo aircraft.
